What it means

The ECM sees an electrical problem in the fuel-pump primary control circuit. On this platform the low-pressure supply is provided by an in-tank or early block-mounted electric lift pump; the VP44 injection pump is mechanically driven with pump-mounted electronics. This code is about the lift-pump control circuit, not VP44 timing or encoder faults.1

Most likely causes

  1. Lift pump power/ground or relay circuit fault — Open, high resistance, or short in the lift-pump relay, fuse, wiring, or connectors prevents the ECM from controlling pump primary circuit. Inspect relay socket, fuse panel, and harness for corrosion, heat damage, or loose terminals.1
  2. Lift pump motor failure / seized or open winding — A failed lift-pump motor draws abnormal current or no current, triggering primary-circuit fault detection. Typical weak point on this platform; chronic low supply pressure is a classic VP44 killer.12
  3. ECM driver or wiring harness chafing to ground/short — Chafed harness near frame/ engine can short the pump control wire to ground or power, setting primary-circuit fault. Check routing along chassis and near lift-pump and relay.1
  4. Intermittent lift-pump relay contact degradation — Heat cycling degrades relay contacts causing voltage drop or intermittent operation, interpreted as primary-circuit fault.1
  5. Poor ground for lift-pump or ECM power distribution — Corroded ground points raise circuit resistance and cause ECM to flag primary-circuit fault.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0230 is present and note conditions.
  2. Check lift-pump relay and fuse for proper voltage supply and control signal from ECM; swap relay with known good.
  3. Inspect wiring harness from ECM to relay and relay to lift pump for chafing, corrosion, or heat damage; perform visual and wiggle test.
  4. Measure lift-pump power and ground at pump connector with key on/engine running; compare to spec and check for voltage drop under load.
  5. Command lift pump on with scan tool if supported and monitor circuit feedback; observe for intermittent dropouts.
  6. Inspect and clean ground points for ECM and lift-pump circuit; verify continuity to chassis.
  7. If circuit integrity is good, test lift-pump current draw; abnormal draw indicates pump motor failure.
  8. Clear codes, road test, and recheck for recurrence.
  9. If fault persists after circuit verification, evaluate ECM driver output per manufacturer diagnostic procedure.
