What it means

Most likely causes

  1. APPS sensor internal wear / out-of-range voltage — APPS potentiometer wear or internal fault causes signal to drift outside expected range or be inconsistent. Typical for P0121/P0122/P0221 on this platform where APPS is still used.123
  2. APPS wiring/connector corrosion, chafing, or poor ground — Intermittent opens or resistance in the APPS harness or connector produce erratic voltage, triggering range/performance. APPS faults remain common on 5.9 Common Rail.12
  3. ECM reference voltage or ground supply issue affecting APPS — Low or unstable 5 V reference/ground to the APPS skews sensor output, causing range/performance detection. Generic definition is signal outside expected range or inconsistent.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze frame and repeatability; confirm P0121 sets with pedal sweep and no other pedal codes present.
  2. Inspect APPS connector and wiring for corrosion, oil contamination, chafing, and secure mounting; check harness routing near hot/exhaust components.
  3. With key on engine off, monitor APPS voltage on a scan tool while slowly sweeping pedal from closed to wide open; look for smooth, monotonic change and values within spec, and note dropouts or flat spots.
  4. Check APPS reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector; compare to spec and inspect for voltage drop under wiggle test of harness.
  5. If voltage sweep is erratic or out of range, compare APPS A vs B signals for correlation; consider APPS replacement if electrical tests pass but signal remains out of range.
  6. Clear codes and road test with live data to confirm pedal signal tracks smoothly and code does not reset.
