P0128 — Coolant Thermostat Below Regulating Temperature (5.9 Cummins Common Rail)
Engine coolant does not reach the expected operating temperature in the expected time.
What it means
The ECM has detected that coolant temperature remains below the thermostat regulating temperature during normal driving. On the 5.9L Cummins Common Rail 2003-2007 this is a cooling-system monitoring condition.1
Most likely causes
- Thermostat stuck open or missing — A conventional wax-element mechanical thermostat that is stuck open or removed will keep coolant circulating through the radiator, preventing the engine from reaching regulating temperature. This is the most common cause of P0128 on this platform.1
- Coolant temperature sensor reading low — A biased-low engine coolant temperature sensor or its wiring can report coolant temperature below actual, causing the ECM to set P0128 even if the thermostat is functional.1
- Low coolant level / air pocket — Insufficient coolant or trapped air around the coolant temperature sensor reduces heat transfer and can keep reported temperature low during warm-up.1
- Cooling fan / fan clutch engaged excessively — Continuous fan engagement or a fan clutch that stays locked can over-cool the engine at highway speeds, delaying warm-up.1
- Extended idle / very cold ambient with short trips — Prolonged idle or very short drive cycles in cold ambient may prevent the engine from reaching regulating temperature in the expected time.1
How to diagnose
- Verify freeze-frame conditions and confirm P0128 is current, not historical.
- Monitor live coolant temperature during a normal drive cycle; compare to expected warm-up curve for the 5.9L Cummins Common Rail.
- Inspect coolant level, condition, and bleed for air pockets; confirm proper fill.
- Check thermostat operation by observing temperature rise rate and stabilized operating temperature; a thermostat that never reaches normal regulating temperature indicates a stuck-open condition.
- Test engine coolant temperature sensor voltage/ resistance vs. temperature chart and inspect wiring/connectors for corrosion or damage.
- Inspect cooling fan operation and fan clutch engagement; confirm fan is not running continuously under light load.
- Review ambient temperature and drive cycle history to rule out extended idle/short-trip conditions.
