P0192 — Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Low Input (5.9 Cummins Common Rail)
Diagnostic reference for 5.9L Cummins Common Rail 2003–2007 (ISB).
What it means
Engine control module detects fuel rail pressure sensor signal voltage lower than expected. On this platform the rail pressure sensor is part of the Bosch CP3 common-rail system with FCA/MPROP and mechanical rail pressure relief valve.1
Most likely causes
- Rail pressure sensor internal failure or damaged sensor connector/wiring causing low voltage signal — Sensor signal low due to open/shorted wiring, corroded connector, or failed sensor element. Inspect harness and connector at rail sensor for chafing, oil intrusion, and pin tension; check reference voltage and ground at sensor connector with key on.1
- Chafed or shorted signal wire between rail pressure sensor and ECM — Wiring harness rub-through near valve cover or firewall can pull signal low. Perform visual inspection and wiggle test while monitoring sensor voltage PID.1
- ECM reference voltage supply or ground issue affecting sensor circuit — Low 5 V reference or poor ECM ground can bias sensor low. Verify reference voltage and ground integrity at sensor connector and ECM harness.1
- Contaminated or damaged rail pressure sensor connector from fuel/oil exposure — Leaking rail fittings can wick fuel into connector, causing low signal. Clean connector, inspect seals, and confirm proper sensor installation.1
How to diagnose
- Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0192 active with engine running and at idle.
- Inspect rail pressure sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, oil/fuel contamination; repair as needed.
- Key on, engine off: check sensor reference voltage, ground, and signal wire continuity to ECM; compare to spec.
- Monitor rail pressure sensor voltage PID vs actual rail pressure; low voltage with plausible pressure suggests circuit fault, not mechanical pressure loss.
- If wiring and connector are good, substitute known-good rail pressure sensor and retest to isolate sensor failure.
