P0193 — Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit High (5.9 Cummins Common Rail)

What it means

The ECM has detected the fuel rail pressure sensor signal is higher than the expected range. On this platform the rail pressure sensor is part of the Bosch CP3 common-rail system with a fuel control actuator (FCA/MPROP) on the pump inlet and a mechanical rail pressure relief/pressure-limiting valve on the rail.1

Most likely causes

  1. Rail pressure sensor internal short / biased high voltage — Sensor output stuck high or shorted to voltage; ECM sees out-of-range high signal.1
  2. Rail pressure sensor signal wiring shorted to battery/5V or chafed to power — Harness damage causing the signal wire to read high voltage.1
  3. Connector corrosion / poor terminal contact at rail pressure sensor — Intermittent high resistance or reference/ground issue skewing sensor voltage high.1
  4. ECM reference voltage or ground fault affecting sensor circuit — Shared 5V reference or sensor ground problem raises apparent sensor voltage.1
  5. Actual over-pressure condition causing sensor to read high (mechanical) — If rail pressure truly exceeds normal, sensor may report high; on this platform rail-pressure codes P0087/P0088 and FCA codes P0090 apply, and the system has a mechanical rail pressure relief/pressure-limiting valve.123

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0193 is present and check for accompanying rail-pressure or FCA codes.
  2. Inspect rail pressure sensor connector and wiring for chafing, oil intrusion, corrosion; check harness routing near hot/exhaust components.
  3. Measure sensor reference voltage, ground, and signal voltage key-on engine-off; compare to spec and to a known-good sensor reading.
  4. Perform wiggle test on sensor harness while monitoring live data to detect intermittent high signal.
  5. If electrical tests pass, review actual vs desired rail pressure data at idle and under load; look for true over-pressure trends that could set P0088.
  6. Check FCA/MPROP control circuit integrity and operation; FCA faults are P0090 on this platform.
  7. Inspect mechanical rail pressure relief/pressure-limiting valve for sticking and verify low-pressure supply from in-tank lift pump is adequate.
