P0263 — Cylinder 1 Contribution/Balance Fault (5.9 Cummins Common Rail)

Diagnostic reference for 5.9L Cummins Common Rail 2003–2007 ISB.

Updated September 2, 2026

What it means

The PCM detects cylinder 1 output deviates from the others; Pxx6x family covers cylinders 1-8. On this platform P0263 is cylinder 1 contribution/balance fault and typically presents as misfire/rough idle and power loss under load.1

Most likely causes

  1. Failing Bosch common-rail solenoid injector on cylinder 1 — Contribution/balance fault most often traced to a failing Bosch common-rail solenoid injector for cylinder 1; injectors are Bosch common-rail solenoid type and contribution/balance codes are P0263-family.12
  2. Injector wiring/connector fault for cylinder 1 — Electrical faults show as P0201–P0206; contribution/balance as P0263-family. Injector circuit/open faults are detected by ECM for cylinder 1.21
  3. Fuel delivery issue affecting cylinder 1 — Code typically presents with misfire/rough idle and power loss under load, most often traced to injector, wiring/connector, or fuel delivery issue affecting cylinder 1.1
  4. Rail pressure control deviation affecting balance — Less commonly rail pressure control or mechanical issues can contribute; platform has CP3 pump with FCA/MPROP and rail pressure sensor/relief valve.13

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code P0263 is present and check for accompanying injector circuit codes P0201–P0206.
  2. Review freeze-frame for idle vs load conditions; note misfire/rough idle and power loss under load typical for this code.
  3. Inspect cylinder 1 injector electrical connector and wiring for damage/corrosion; compare to other cylinders.
  4. Check rail pressure actual vs desired at idle and under load using scan tool; platform uses CP3 with FCA/MPROP and rail pressure sensor/relief valve.
  5. Perform cylinder contribution/balance test per Cummins procedure to confirm cylinder 1 deviation.
  6. If electrical fault suspected, check injector circuit resistance/continuity for cylinder 1 vs spec; electrical faults show as P0201–P0206.

Rough cost and difficulty

Parts and labor vary by region and shop; injector replacement is commonly the most expensive repair in this family.

When to see a pro

If rail pressure is unstable, high-pressure fuel system is involved, or injector replacement is required. High-pressure fuel work is safety-critical. Have a qualified diesel technician perform testing and repairs.
