P0087 — Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low (6.4 Power Stroke)

Measured fuel rail pressure is below the PCM's commanded value.

What it means

On the 6.4L Power Stroke 2008-2010 common-rail, the PCM commands rail pressure via the pump’s fuel pressure control/volume control valve and monitors it with the rail pressure sensor. P0087 is a valid rail-pressure code for this platform; the engine is common-rail with a gear-driven high-pressure pump, rail pressure sensor, and piezo injectors controlled through the FICM, and it is NOT HEUI with ICP/IPR.1

Most likely causes

  1. High-pressure fuel pump failure or wear — The gear-driven high-pressure pump supplies the common rail. Sudden loss of power and P0087/P0088 events have been reported with high-pressure pump failure on this platform, sometimes with metal debris entering the engine.23
  2. Low fuel supply / restriction to the high-pressure pump — Inadequate low-pressure supply (lift pump, filters, fuel/water separator, tank pickup) can starve the high-pressure pump, leading to rail pressure below command. NHTSA reports cite low-pressure and high-pressure pump issues together with white smoke and engine shutdown on the 6.4L.4
  3. Fuel system leak / pressure loss in high-pressure circuit — The PCM can detect abnormal pressure loss. On the 6.4L, P0093 large leak is a signature code for rail pressure the PCM cannot account for, with causes including leaking/stuck injector, failed rail-pressure relief valve, cracked high-pressure line, or worn high-pressure pump. Treat as a real high-pressure fuel leak until proven a sensor fault.5
  4. Rail pressure sensor or wiring fault — An inaccurate rail pressure sensor or wiring can cause measured pressure to read low versus commanded. P0087 generic definition is measured rail pressure below commanded.1
  5. Fuel pressure control / volume control valve performance — The PCM regulates rail pressure with the fuel pressure control/volume control valve on the pump. A sticking or electrically faulty valve can prevent achieving commanded pressure. P0088 high-pressure events have been linked to fuel pump failure on this platform.63

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze-frame and symptom conditions for P0087; confirm rail pressure actual vs desired at idle and under load using a scan tool.
  2. Inspect low-pressure supply: check lift pump output, fuel filters/fuel-water separator condition and restriction, and for air ingress or clogged tank pickup.
  3. Monitor live rail pressure and commanded pressure during a controlled load increase; look for inability to reach target and pressure decay after throttle lift.
  4. Check high-pressure circuit integrity: inspect high-pressure lines and rail-pressure relief valve for external leakage; note that internal injector leak or high-pressure pump wear can present as pressure loss without external signs.
  5. Test rail pressure sensor signal and reference/ground circuits for plausibility and compare to a known-good reading or substitute sensor.
  6. Evaluate fuel pressure control/volume control valve command and response; check pump electrical connections and pump mechanical health per manufacturer test criteria.
  7. If pressure cannot be maintained, consider high-pressure pump failure; NHTSA complaints document sudden power loss and pump failure on 6.4L trucks with rail pressure codes.
