P0263 — Cylinder 1 Contribution/Balance Fault (6.4 Power Stroke)
P0263 is a contribution/balance fault for cylinder 1 on the 6.4L Power Stroke. The PCM detects cylinder 1 output deviating from the others in the Pxx6x family.
What it means
The PCM has detected that cylinder 1 output deviates from the others during a contribution/balance test. On the 6.4L Power Stroke (2008-2010) this is a common-rail piezo injector system controlled via FICM; contribution/balance codes are in the P0263/P0266/P0269 family.1
Most likely causes
- Cylinder 1 piezo injector performance / leaking or stuck injector — A weak or leaking cylinder 1 piezo injector changes fuel delivery and balance. Late post-injection during regen can wash fuel past the rings, a known 6.4 issue leading to engine-oil fuel dilution.1
- FICM performance or cylinder 1 injector driver fault — FICM controls the 8 piezo injectors. FICM performance issues can affect individual cylinder contribution; P0611 is FICM performance on this platform.12
- High-pressure fuel system unable to maintain rail pressure for cylinder 1 — The 6.4 uses a gear-driven high-pressure pump feeding a rail with rail pressure sensor and fuel pressure control/volume control valve. Rail pressure faults can manifest as contribution/balance. Signature 6.4 high-pressure fuel leaks are P0093/P0094; high-pressure pump failure is reported as sudden loss of operation.34
How to diagnose
- Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0263 is present and no accompanying injector circuit codes P0201-P0208.
- Check FICM codes; P0611 indicates FICM performance.
- Review rail pressure actual vs desired at idle and load; look for P0087/P0088/P0090 rail pressure faults. Signature 6.4 high-pressure leak codes are P0093/P0094.
- Perform cylinder contribution/balance test with scan tool; monitor cylinder 1 fuel trim/balance rate.
- Inspect engine oil level and smell for fuel dilution from late post-injection during regen, a known 6.4 problem.
- Check for misfire/rough idle symptoms and exhaust smoke; white smoke with fuel pump failure reported on 6.4.

High-pressure fuel pump replacement is a commonly reported high-cost repair on 6.4 Power Stroke, with owner reports of ~$10k and dealer estimates ~$13k.
When to see a pro
If rail pressure cannot be maintained, high-pressure pump or injector replacement is required. High-pressure fuel work is safety-critical; have a qualified diesel technician perform testing and repairs. If engine oil shows fuel dilution, change oil and investigate regen/post-injection control before further damage.
