P0611 — Fuel Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control Performance (6.4 Power Stroke)

What it means
The engine control module has detected that the fuel injection pump’s fuel metering control is not performing within the expected range. On the 6.4L Power Stroke this is a common-rail system with a gear-driven high-pressure fuel pump feeding the rail, rail pressure sensor, and a fuel pressure control/volume control valve on the pump; injectors are piezo and controlled through a Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM).1
Most likely causes
- High-pressure fuel pump metering/control valve performance degradation or failure — The PCM monitors commanded vs actual rail pressure via the rail pressure sensor and the pump’s fuel pressure control/volume control valve. A failing pump or sticking control valve can cause metering performance outside expected range. NHTSA reports describe sudden loss of power with high-pressure fuel pump failure on this platform, with catastrophic pump failure sending debris through the fuel system.23
- Contaminated or restricted fuel supply causing pump metering error — Low-pressure supply issues (restriction, failing low-pressure pump, clogged filter) can force the high-pressure pump to operate outside its control window, leading to metering performance codes. NHTSA complaints note low-pressure and high-pressure pump failures together with white smoke and engine shutdown on the 6.4L.4
- Rail pressure sensor or wiring fault giving false metering feedback — The PCM relies on rail pressure sensor feedback to judge pump metering. - Review recent regen history and engine oil level/condition for fuel dilution from late post-injection; platform notes engine-oil fuel dilution is a known 6.4 issue.

Another owner reported ~$10,000 for high-pressure pump diagnosis/repair. Low/high pressure pump issues have been reported with estimated costs around $13,000. Costs vary by labor and parts; diagnosis should confirm root cause before parts replacement.

If rail pressure cannot be controlled, if metal contamination is suspected from pump failure, or if FICM/injector electrical faults are present, have a qualified diesel technician perform fuel system inspection and pressure testing. Do not attempt high-pressure fuel system disassembly without proper containment and flushing procedures.
