What it means
The PCM is counting active DPF regenerations and has exceeded its expected frequency threshold. On the 6.4L Power Stroke this means the aftertreatment system is loading with soot quickly or the regen control logic is being triggered repeatedly. The platform uses DOC+DPF with active regeneration via in-cylinder late post-injection; there is no SCR/DEF on 2008-2010. P2459 is listed as a valid DPF regeneration-frequency code for this platform.1
Most likely causes
- Excessive soot production from engine combustion — High soot output loads the DPF faster, forcing more frequent active regens. Common contributors on the 6.4L are injector performance issues, fuel dilution from late post-injection during regen, and overall engine health affecting combustion. The 6.4 uses piezo injectors controlled via FICM and late post-injection for regen, which is a known source of fuel dilution.12
- DPF restriction / soot accumulation already present — An already restricted DPF raises delta-P and exhaust backpressure, prompting the PCM to initiate regen sooner and more often. Related platform codes include P2463 for soot accumulation/restriction and P246C for restriction with limited power.2
- DPF efficiency degradation — Reduced filtration efficiency causes the PCM to attempt more frequent regeneration to maintain acceptable emissions. P2002 is DPF efficiency below threshold on this platform.3

How to diagnose
- Verify freeze frame and mileage since last regen; confirm P2459 is current and check for companion DPF codes such as P2002, P244A, P244B, P2463, P246C.
- Inspect DPF differential pressure sensor and tubing for leaks, soot plugging, or damage; compare sensor voltage to expected delta-P at idle and at a steady cruise.
- Review EGT sensor data for plausibility across DOC inlet, DOC outlet/DPF inlet and DPF outlet; look for open/short or implausible temperature rise during regen.
- Check engine running condition for excessive smoke, rough idle, misfire, or contribution faults; scan for injector circuit/performance codes P0201-P0208, P0263/P0266/P0269 family, and FICM performance P0611. Late post-injection during regen can cause fuel dilution.
- Assess oil level and condition for fuel dilution; rising level or thin oil suggests injector/post-injection issues that increase soot and oil contamination on the 6.4L.
- Perform a controlled road test with live data to monitor soot load model, regen status, exhaust temperatures, and delta-P; note frequency of regen initiation and whether regens complete.
