What it means

The PCM detects cylinder 1 output deviates from the others (Pxx6x family covers cylinders 1-8).1

Most likely causes

  1. Cylinder 1 injector performance / solenoid control issue — Solenoid injector not delivering expected fuel quantity for cylinder 1; electrical or mechanical injector fault can produce a contribution/balance deviation. Injector circuit faults are tracked as P0201–P0206, P0263-family.12
  2. Low rail pressure or rail pressure control problem affecting cylinder 1 balance — CP3 high-pressure pump, rail pressure sensor, fuel control actuator (FCA/MPROP) on the pump, and mechanical rail pressure relief/pressure-limiting valve on the rail regulate rail pressure. Pressure deviations can cause contribution imbalance.1
  3. Low-pressure supply restriction / in-tank lift pump performance — Factory in-tank electric supply pump / fuel module supplies low-pressure fuel to the CP3. Inadequate supply can cause rail pressure control issues and cylinder contribution faults.1
  4. Mechanical engine condition affecting cylinder 1 — Compression loss, valve train, or gear-driven timing issues specific to cylinder 1 can reduce contribution. Engine is inline-6 with gear-driven timing (no chain, no belt).1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0263 is active and note engine speed/load/temperature at set.
  2. Check related fuel system codes: injector circuit codes P0201–P0206, rail pressure sensor codes such as P0193, and fuel control actuator performance.
  3. Review rail pressure actual vs desired at idle and under load using scan tool; look for pressure drop or control deviation.
  4. Inspect low-pressure supply: measure lift pump output volume/pressure per service spec and check in-tank module, filters, and lines for restriction.
  5. Perform cylinder contribution/balance test with scan tool; compare cylinder 1 to others and note RPM drop per cylinder.
  6. Check injector electrical circuit for cylinder 1: harness, connector, and ECM driver per P0201 diagnostic logic.
  7. If electrical tests pass, evaluate injector mechanical performance via contribution test and rail pressure response; consider injector flow/return testing.
  8. Inspect mechanical health of cylinder 1: compression test and valve train inspection; confirm gear-driven timing integrity.
