What it means

Crank and cam position signals are out of the expected phase relationship.1

Most likely causes

  1. Cam or crank sensor fault — Sensor signal missing/out of range or internal failure causing correlation error.1
  2. Reluctor-wheel damage — Damaged or contaminated tone wheel changes the edge timing seen by the sensors.1
  3. Wiring/connector issue to cam or crank sensor — Open, short, or corrosion in the sensor circuits produces implausible correlation.1
  4. Mechanical timing issue (rare) — Actual valve-train timing deviation can produce a persistent correlation fault.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze-frame data; confirm P0016 is current and note engine speed/load at set.
  2. Inspect camshaft and crankshaft position sensor connectors and wiring for corrosion, chafing, or loose pins.
  3. Check sensor supply voltage and ground per service information; look for intermittent signal dropouts.
  4. Examine reluctor wheels for missing teeth, debris, or damage using a borescope where accessible.
  5. Review recent repairs or timing-component work that could affect correlation.
  6. Clear codes, perform a controlled idle and light-load drive to see if correlation returns.
