P0263 — Cylinder 1 Contribution/Balance Fault (6.7 Power Stroke)

What it means

The PCM detects that cylinder 1 output deviates from the others (Pxx6x family covers cylinders 1-8).1

Most likely causes

  1. Injector wear or performance loss on cylinder 1 — Typical on this platform: Injector wear, low compression on that cylinder, or wiring to the injector.1
  2. Low compression on cylinder 1 — Typical on this platform: Injector wear, low compression on that cylinder, or wiring to the injector.1
  3. Wiring or connector fault to cylinder 1 injector — Typical on this platform: Injector wear, low compression on that cylinder, or wiring to the injector.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0263 is active and note engine conditions.
  2. Perform cylinder contribution/balance test with scan tool to confirm cylinder 1 deviation.
  3. Inspect injector electrical connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or loose pins at cylinder 1.
  4. Check injector command and feedback data for cylinder 1 vs others; look for abnormal contribution values.
  5. If electrical checks pass, evaluate mechanical health (compression) for cylinder 1 as a contributor to imbalance.
  6. Clear codes, road test under load, and re-evaluate for repeat P0263.
