P0470 — Exhaust Pressure Sensor Malfunction (6.7 Power Stroke)

P0470 indicates the exhaust back-pressure sensor signal is out of range or implausible on the 6.7 Powerstroke. The code is tied to the exhaust/DPF system and…

What it means

Exhaust back-pressure sensor signal is out of range or implausible.1

Most likely causes

  1. Plugged or restricted exhaust pressure sensor tubes — Soot or condensate can block the small sense tubes to the DPF differential pressure sensor, causing implausible readings.1
  2. Exhaust pressure sensor failure — Internal sensor drift or failure produces out-of-range voltage.1
  3. Wiring or connector fault to the pressure sensor — Corrosion, chafing, or poor pin contact corrupts the signal to the PCM.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze frame and confirm P0470 is present with no additional codes that would dominate.
  2. Inspect exhaust pressure sensor and sense tubes for soot plugging, moisture, or damage; clear tubes and retest.
  3. Check sensor supply voltage, ground, and signal voltage at the sensor connector against spec; wiggle-test harness for intermittents.
  4. Compare live DPF differential pressure at idle and during a controlled load to expected values; implausible values support sensor/tube fault.
  5. If electrical tests pass and tubes are clear, substitute a known-good exhaust pressure sensor and re-evaluate.

Parts and tools you may need

Rough cost and difficulty

Parts cost varies by component; labor depends on access. Obtain a local estimate.

When to see a pro

High-pressure exhaust and aftertreatment work can be hazardous. If diagnosis is inconclusive or repair involves opening the DPF system, have a qualified diesel technician perform the work.
