P0341 — Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance (7.3 Power Stroke)

What it means
The PCM detects the camshaft position sensor signal is outside the expected range or performance. On the 7.3L Power Stroke the CMP on the front cover is the only engine-speed/position input; there is no crankshaft sensor. A range/performance fault means the PCM is seeing a signal that is plausible but inconsistent with expected engine operation.12
Most likely causes
- Camshaft position sensor (CMP) on front cover degraded or failing — Classic stall/no-start/hard-start failure on this platform; sensor signal drifts out of range.2
- CMP wiring/connector damage, corrosion, or oil contamination at the front cover — Range/performance can be caused by high resistance, intermittent contact, or short to power/ground in the CMP circuit.1
- PCM power/ground or internal reference-voltage issue affecting CMP circuit — P0603/P0605 PCM internal/KAM errors are common on this platform and can manifest as sensor circuit faults.2
- Engine timing/gear-train anomaly affecting CMP signal correlation — The 7.3L uses gear-driven timing; a fault that changes camshaft-to-engine speed relationship can cause range/performance. Do not cite timing-chain stretch — engine is gear-driven.2
How to diagnose
- Verify code P0341 is present and check for related codes P0344 (intermittent) or PCM codes P0603/P0605.
- Inspect CMP sensor at front cover for physical damage, oil contamination, and connector pin corrosion; check harness routing for chafing near front cover and valve covers.
- Check CMP reference voltage and signal return at the sensor connector with key on/engine off, then monitor AC signal amplitude/frequency while cranking; compare to known-good pattern.
- Inspect PCM power and ground circuits and related connectors; verify clean grounds and battery voltage stability, given common PCM power/ground issues on this platform.
- If signal is present but erratic, perform wiggle test on CMP harness and inspect for oil intrusion into connector; also inspect front cover area for leaks that can contaminate sensor.
- Confirm engine mechanical integrity consistent with gear-driven timing; do not assume timing-chain stretch.
