What it means

The PCM sees an electrical fault in the glow-plug heater circuit. On the 7.3L Power Stroke 1999-2003 this is the eight glow plugs, glow-plug relay and, on Super Duty, the glow-plug control module; the engine has no grid heater. The fault is electrical, not a fuel-rail or HEUI injection-pressure issue.1

Most likely causes

  1. Glow-plug relay or glow-plug control module failure / high resistance or open in the relay/module power or control circuit — The PCM commands the relay/module; an open, short, corroded contacts or failed module prevents proper glow-plug energizing and sets P0380.1
  2. Open or short in glow-plug power/ground wiring, including chafed or oil-soaked Under-Valve-Cover Harness (UVCH) sections that feed glow plugs — The UVCH carries injector and glow-plug circuits under each valve cover and is a known failure point for oil-soaked/chafed wiring that can set glow-plug circuit codes.1
  3. One or more glow plugs open, shorted, or with high resistance — A failed glow plug changes circuit current/voltage seen by the PCM and triggers the heater-circuit malfunction.1
  4. Poor connections at glow-plug bus bar, valve-cover pass-through connectors, or PCM power/ground affecting glow-plug driver monitoring — High resistance or intermittent connections alter the circuit signature the PCM monitors for the glow-plug heater circuit.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze-frame conditions; confirm P0380 is present on a 7.3L Power Stroke 1999-2003 Super Duty/Excursion with HEUI, no common rail, CMP-only speed/position, and glow plugs with relay/module, no grid heater.
  2. Inspect glow-plug relay and, where equipped, glow-plug control module power feeds, grounds, and PCM command signals; look for corrosion, heat damage, or loose terminals.
  3. Perform a resistance/continuity check of the glow-plug supply circuit from relay/module to each glow plug, including valve-cover pass-through connectors and UVCH sections; inspect for oil contamination, chafing, or damaged insulation.
  4. Measure individual glow-plug resistance to ground and compare to spec; identify open or shorted plugs.
  5. Check PCM-related power and ground circuits; on this platform P0603/P0605 PCM KAM/ROM errors are common and can be related to power/ground issues that affect driver monitoring.
  6. Clear codes, command a glow-plug cycle with a scan tool if supported, and monitor circuit feedback for recurrence; re-check after repairs.
  7. Note: Do not describe this engine as common-rail; it is HEUI with HPOP/ICP/IPR. Codes P0087/P0088/P0090/P0193 rail-pressure do not apply to this platform.

If the fault persists after relay/module and wiring checks, or if multiple glow-plug circuit codes appear with injector codes suggesting UVCH damage, have a diesel technician inspect the under-valve-cover harnesses and PCM power/ground integrity. Do not attempt high-pressure oil or injector repairs as a fix for P0380.
