What it means

Most likely causes

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0470 is present on 7.3L Power Stroke 1999-2003 with EBP system, no DPF/VGT.
  2. Inspect EBP sensor and pressure tube routing; look for cracks, kinks, carbon blockage, or loose fittings at the exhaust manifold/EBP regulator area.
  3. Disconnect EBP sensor and inspect connector for corrosion, oil contamination, bent pins; check wiring harness for chafing near exhaust heat.
  4. With key on engine off, check EBP sensor reference voltage and ground per wiring diagram; compare sensor signal voltage to spec and to a known-good sensor.
  5. Apply regulated low-pressure air to the sensor via the pressure tube (sensor removed) and monitor PID/signal for smooth, linear change; erratic or stuck output indicates a faulty sensor.
  6. Clear codes, test drive with cold start to allow EBP regulator operation; re-check for P0470/P0472/P0473 recurrence.
