What it means

The PCM is detecting a low signal from the exhaust back-pressure sensor circuit. On 7.3L Power Stroke 1999-2003 Super Duty/Excursion the EBP system is present for cold idle warm-up; the engine is HEUI with no common rail, no VGT, no EGR/DPF/SCR.12

Most likely causes

  1. EBP sensor signal shorted to ground or internally failed low — Wiring or sensor fault pulls the signal low; typical EBP circuit low condition on 7.3L.12
  2. EBP sensor connector corrosion / oil contamination — Exhaust-side heat and moisture degrade the connector, causing low voltage reading.12
  3. EBP sensor supply/reference voltage low or open — Loss of 5 V reference or power to the sensor makes the signal read low.1
  4. EBP tube plugged or sensor port blocked — A blocked pressure tube can cause an implausible low reading from the sensor.2
  5. PCM input fault for EBP circuit — Internal PCM input issue can read the EBP signal low.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0472 on 7.3L Power Stroke 1999-2003.
  2. Inspect EBP sensor and wiring at the exhaust manifold/pipe and along the harness for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, oil contamination.
  3. Check EBP sensor reference voltage and ground at the connector with key on; compare to spec.
  4. Measure EBP signal voltage at idle and with engine warm; compare to expected range and to a known-good reference.
  5. Inspect and clear the EBP pressure tube and sensor port for soot/plugging; verify tube integrity.
  6. Perform a wiggle test on the EBP harness while monitoring live data to reveal intermittent low signal.
  7. If electrical tests pass, compare EBP PID to a similar vehicle or substitute a known-good sensor to isolate sensor vs wiring/PCM.
