What it means

The PCM has detected an internal fault in its non-volatile memory (ROM) that prevents reliable operation of the engine control software. On the 7.3L Power Stroke P0603/P0605 are PCM internal KAM/ROM errors, very common on this platform, usually a PCM power/ground or a failing PCM, not an engine fault.12

Most likely causes

  1. PCM power/ground integrity loss — Intermittent or poor PCM power/ground feeds can corrupt ROM/KAM checks and set P0605. Inspect battery cables, chassis grounds, and PCM connectors for corrosion, looseness, or water intrusion; verify stable battery voltage during cranking and key-on. This is a diagnostic check only.12
  2. Failing or corrupted PCM internal ROM — Internal PCM non-volatile memory fault prevents reliable engine control software operation. If power/ground integrity checks pass and the code returns immediately after a clear, PCM replacement or professional reprogramming is indicated.
