What it means

On the 7.3L Power Stroke, P1280 is an Injection Control Pressure (ICP) sensor circuit out-of-range-LOW fault. The PCM sees the ICP signal below the valid range. This is the engine-oil injection-pressure system (HPOP / IPR / ICP sensor), NOT a glow-plug code and NOT a fuel-rail-pressure code.1

Most likely causes

  1. ICP sensor signal shorted to ground or wiring/connector fault causing low voltage reading — The PCM interprets a low voltage from the ICP sensor circuit as out-of-range low. Inspect ICP sensor connector and wiring for chafing, oil intrusion, or short to ground; check sensor reference and signal wires for continuity and isolation.1
  2. Failed ICP sensor (biased low / internal short) — A failed ICP sensor can pull the signal low. Compare ICP voltage with a known-good sensor or scope the signal while monitoring PCM data; replace sensor if signal remains out of range with wiring verified good.1
  3. PCM reference voltage or ground issue affecting ICP circuit — Loss of 5 V reference or poor PCM ground can make the ICP signal read low. Verify PCM power/ground circuits and reference voltage supply to sensors before condemning the ICP sensor.1
  4. Severe high-pressure oil system leak / aerated oil causing actual low ICP that the PCM flags as circuit out of range low under certain conditions — Low oil level or aerated oil also causes ICP faults. Check engine oil level, HPOP reservoir, and for external high-pressure oil leaks; air ingress can cause erratic ICP readings.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze-frame conditions; confirm P1280 is present on a 1999–2003 7.3L Power Stroke HEUI system.
  2. Inspect ICP sensor connector at driver-side/front oil rail for oil intrusion, corrosion, or damaged pins; check harness for chafing near valve covers and HPOP.
  3. Measure ICP sensor reference voltage, ground, and signal voltage key-on/engine-off; compare to spec and to a known-good sensor.
  4. Check PCM power and ground circuits; verify 5 V reference integrity to the ICP circuit.
  5. If wiring and reference are good, substitute a known-good ICP sensor and retest; monitor ICP PID with scan tool during cranking/running.
  6. Inspect high-pressure oil system for leaks, low oil level, or aeration that could produce abnormal ICP behavior; address oil system issues before finalizing sensor diagnosis.
