What it means
On the 7.3L Power Stroke, P1281 is an Injection Control Pressure (ICP) sensor circuit out-of-range-HIGH fault — the PCM sees the ICP signal above the valid range (sensor biased high, signal shorted to voltage, or a wiring/connector fault). This is the HPOP / IPR / ICP oil-pressure system, NOT a glow-plug or fuel-rail code.1
Most likely causes
- ICP sensor internal failure / biased high — The ICP sensor on the driver-side/front oil rail can fail internally and output a voltage above the calibrated range. This is the most common electrical cause of P1281 on the 7.3L HEUI system.1
- ICP signal wire shorted to voltage / chafed harness — The ICP signal circuit runs from the sensor to the PCM. Chafing, oil-soaked connectors, or a short to a voltage source can pull the signal high. Inspect the ICP pigtail and routing near the valve cover and HPOP area.1
- ICP connector oil contamination / poor contact — Oil intrusion into the ICP connector can cause resistance changes and a high bias reading. Clean and inspect the connector and seal.1
- PCM input circuit fault — A rare PCM internal input fault can read the ICP voltage high. Verify wiring first; PCM faults are less common than sensor/wiring issues.1
How to diagnose
- Verify code and freeze-frame; confirm P1281 is present and not accompanied by low ICP performance codes such as P1211, P1280, P1283.
- Key ON, engine OFF: check ICP sensor reference voltage and signal return at the sensor connector. Compare to spec; a signal voltage at or near reference indicates a short-to-voltage or failed sensor.
- Inspect ICP sensor connector and wiring for oil contamination, corrosion, chafing, and proper routing away from hot/exhaust components.
- Disconnect ICP sensor and measure sensor output with a calibrated pressure source if available; otherwise substitute a known-good ICP sensor and retest for code return.
- Check PCM connector pins for corrosion and oil wicking; verify continuity and isolation of ICP signal wire to ground and power.
- If wiring and sensor test good, evaluate PCM input circuit per manufacturer diagnostic procedures.
