P1316 — Injector Circuit / IDM Codes Detected — 7.3 Power Stroke

P1316 on the 7.3L Power Stroke means the PCM has seen injector-driver-module (IDM) stored faults. The IDM reports its own injector-circuit codes to the PCM…

What it means

Ford enhanced code: the PCM is flagging that the injector driver module (IDM) has stored injector circuit faults of its own. On the 7.3L read the IDM’s own codes to find the cylinder or circuit; common causes are the under-valve-cover harness (UVCH) connectors, an injector coil, or IDM power and ground.1

Most likely causes

  1. IDM has stored injector-circuit faults; P1316 is a summary flag requiring IDM code retrieval — The PCM sets P1316 when the IDM reports internal injector circuit faults. The code itself does not identify a cylinder; the IDM must be interrogated for the specific fault(s).1
  2. Under-valve-cover harness (UVCH) connector/pigtail degradation — Oil-soaked, chafed UVCH connectors under the valve covers are a known failure point on 7.3L HEUI injectors and commonly set injector and glow-plug circuit codes.1
  3. Injector coil/electrical failure on one or more HEUI injectors — An open/shorted injector solenoid can be stored by the IDM and trigger the P1316 summary flag.1
  4. IDM power/ground or IDM-to-PCM wiring issue — Poor IDM power, ground, or communication wiring can cause the IDM to log circuit faults and set P1316.1
  5. IDM internal failure — A failing injector driver module can store internal circuit faults that the PCM reports as P1316.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze-frame and confirm P1316 is present with or without accompanying IDM/cylinder codes. Note recent work under valve covers or electrical repairs.
  2. Retrieve IDM stored codes (IDM self-test) to identify specific cylinder or circuit faults the IDM has logged. P1316 is a summary; the IDM codes pinpoint the problem.
  3. Inspect IDM power and ground circuits and the IDM connectors on the driver-side fender. Check for corrosion, loose pins, and proper voltage/continuity to the IDM.
  4. Inspect the IDM-to-PCM wiring harness for chafing, oil contamination, and connector integrity at both ends. Pay attention to enable (IDM EN), output circuit check (OCC), and fuel delivery command (FDCS) circuits.
  5. Inspect under-valve-cover harnesses (UVCH) on both banks for oil saturation, chafed insulation, backed-out pins, and proper connector seating at the valve cover gasket and injector solenoids.
  6. Perform injector electrical tests at the valve-cover pass-through connectors (coil resistance/continuity to IDM) for the cylinders indicated by IDM codes, comparing to known-good values and looking for opens/shorts.
  7. If IDM codes point to a specific cylinder, isolate that injector circuit (swap UVCH or injector if possible) and re-check IDM codes to determine if the fault follows the injector or stays with the harness/IDM.
  8. If no specific cylinder is identified and power/ground/wiring checks pass, evaluate IDM health by monitoring IDM communication signals and comparing IDM self-test results before and after a controlled key-on/engine-off and running test.

When to see a pro

If IDM codes cannot be retrieved, wiring tests are inconclusive, or the fault persists after UVCH and power/ground repairs, have a diesel technician with 7.3L experience perform IDM signal testing and module evaluation. High-pressure oil and injector circuits require careful handling. If the vehicle shows hard start, no start, misfire, or stalling, seek prompt professional diagnosis.

Check for recalls

Recalls are tied to your truck’s VIN, so check yours directly: enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. Open safety recalls are repaired free at a dealer.
