FC 2962 — EGR Temperature – Above Normal, Moderately Severe (SPN 412 FMI 16) — Cummins ISX15

EGR gas temperature after the cooler is higher than expected on Cummins ISX15 (2010–2017) with CM2250/CM2350 ECM, cooled EGR and DOC+DPF+SCR aftertreatment.

What it means

EGR gas temperature after the cooler is higher than it should be. On this platform the code maps to SPN 412 FMI 16 and is reported as EGR Temperature – Above Normal, Moderately Severe. Typical on this platform: a restricted or failing EGR cooler, low coolant flow, or a sensor problem.1

Most likely causes

  1. Restricted or failing EGR cooler reducing heat rejection — Internal blockage or internal failure of the EGR cooler raises post-cooler gas temperature. Typical on this platform: a restricted or failing EGR cooler is a common cause.1
  2. Low engine coolant flow or cooling system deficiency raising EGR cooler inlet temperature — Insufficient coolant flow or elevated engine coolant temperature reduces cooler effectiveness. Typical on this platform: low coolant flow is a typical cause. Engine coolant temperature above normal can be indicated by FC 2963 (SPN 110 FMI 15) from low coolant, stuck thermostat, fan/radiator issues or heavy load in hot weather.12
  3. EGR temperature sensor or wiring fault reporting high temperature — Sensor drift, wiring damage or connector corrosion can cause an elevated reading. Typical on this platform: a sensor problem is a typical cause. Erratic or implausible EGR temperature readings are described for SPN 412 FMI 2 with known strained sensor wiring at the water jacket.13
  4. Excessive exhaust temperature feeding the EGR circuit — High turbine inlet temperature increases EGR gas temperature entering the cooler. Turbocharger turbine intake temperature above normal (SPN 2789 FMI 15) is typical with excess fueling, boost/air restriction problems or EGR faults.4

How to diagnose

  1. Verify active/mature status and freeze-frame conditions for SPN 412 FMI 16 using Cummins Insite; note engine load, speed, coolant temp and EGR valve command at set.
  2. Compare EGR temperature sensor reading to a calibrated thermocouple or scan-tool live data from a known-good reference; look for offset or erratic behavior. Erratic/implausible EGR temperature is covered by SPN 412 FMI 2 with known wiring strain at the water jacket.
  3. Inspect EGR cooler coolant circuits for flow restriction, external leaks, and signs of internal fouling; check engine coolant temperature and cooling system health. Coolant temperature above normal is SPN 110 FMI 15 with typical causes low coolant, stuck thermostat, fan/radiator problem or heavy load.
  4. Check EGR valve operation and intake restriction; excessive exhaust temperature can raise EGR inlet temperature. Turbine intake temperature above normal (SPN 2789 FMI 15) is typical with excess fueling, boost/air restriction or EGR faults.
  5. Inspect EGR temperature sensor connector and harness for chafing, moisture and strain at the water jacket; repair wiring as needed and re-evaluate. Sensor/wiring faults are a known cause for erratic EGR temperature readings.
  6. If sensor and cooling system check normal, evaluate EGR cooler performance by comparing inlet/outlet temperature delta under steady load; a reduced delta suggests internal restriction or failure. A restricted/failing EGR cooler is typical for this code.

Common mistake to avoid

Replacing the EGR valve without testing it. If the valve still moves freely, a carbon cleaning often fixes the flow code; and if it opens on command but the code stays, the blockage is in the passages or cooler, not the valve. Source: FleetRabbit — EGR valve problems and repair.

When to see a pro

Refer to a qualified diesel technician if the code returns after sensor/wiring checks, if coolant loss or overheating is present, or if EGR cooler removal/testing is required. Do not service high-pressure fuel injection systems without proper training and safety controls. On EPA 2010+ ISX15, SCR faults can trigger operator inducement and escalating derates; address root SCR/DEF faults promptly. See a pro for any safety-critical system work.

Check for recalls

Recalls are tied to your truck’s VIN, so check yours directly: enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. Open safety recalls are repaired free at a dealer.
