What’s going on

On the DD15, loss of power usually indicates an active derate from the aftertreatment system, a restriction in the exhaust aftertreatment, an EGR flow target error, or a fuel rail pressure problem that limits engine output. Low power on the DD15 is often an aftertreatment derate (SCR inducement or a restricted DPF), EGR flow problems, or fuel rail pressure issues. Read codes from the MCM and ACM.1

Most likely causes

  1. Aftertreatment SCR operator inducement derate — SPN 5246 FMI 0 is the DD15 SCR inducement that ends in a 5 mph limit. It is never the root cause; it follows a companion SCR/DEF fault such as low SCR efficiency, DEF quality/level, or a NOx sensor fault. The derate reduces power until the underlying fault is repaired.23
  2. Restricted DPF — High DPF differential pressure from soot or ash load, or a false high reading from plugged/damaged pressure sensor lines, can trigger SPN 3251 FMI 0 and limit power. Interrupted regenerations, engine-side soot, or an ash-loaded filter contribute.45
  3. EGR flow target error — EGR flow below target sets SPN 2659 FMI 1. Typical causes are a sticking/sooted EGR valve, a restricted EGR cooler, or EGR delta pressure sensor/line problems. EGR trouble also loads the DPF faster.67
  4. Fuel rail pressure issue — Erratic or implausible rail pressure can set SPN 157 FMI 2. Causes include a rail pressure sensor or wiring problem, or real pressure fluctuation from air in the fuel or supply restriction. Low-side supply, filters, and air in fuel affect rail pressure.89

How to narrow it down

  1. Read stored and active codes from the MCM and ACM; note SPN 5246 FMI 0, SPN 3251 FMI 0, SPN 2659 FMI 1, SPN 157 FMI 2 and any companion codes.
  2. If SPN 5246 FMI 0 is present, treat it as inducement; identify the underlying SCR/DEF fault (e.g., low SCR efficiency, DEF quality/level, NOx sensor) before addressing power loss.
  3. Check DPF differential pressure data and recent regen history; inspect pressure sensor tubes for plugging/cracks and verify actual restriction versus sensor fault for SPN 3251 FMI 0.
  4. Inspect EGR system for valve sticking/sooting and cooler restriction; check EGR delta pressure sensor and lines for correct readings related to SPN 2659 FMI 1.
  5. Verify fuel system low-side supply, filter condition, and signs of air ingress; review rail pressure actual vs desired and inspect rail pressure sensor and wiring for SPN 157 FMI 2.

Common mistake to avoid

Cleaning or replacing the DPF before checking its pressure sensor and tubes. Cracked, melted, plugged or wet sensor tubes, or a failing sensor, can set DPF codes while the filter itself is fine. They are cheap to check; clear and verify them before touching the filter. Source: FleetRabbit — P2002 DPF efficiency code causes and fixes.

When to see a pro

If SPN 5246 FMI 0 is active with a 5 mph limit, or if high-pressure fuel system diagnosis is required, have a certified Detroit technician perform the work. Do not attempt high-pressure fuel component service without proper training and safety equipment.

Check for recalls

Recalls are tied to your truck’s VIN, so check yours directly: enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. Open safety recalls are repaired free at a dealer.
