P003A — Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance (L5P Duramax)

Diagnostic reference for L5P Duramax (2017–present) P003A. Platform facts are authoritative and override any conflicting source.

What it means

The ECM has detected the turbocharger boost control position sensor/switch signal is outside the expected range or is not performing as expected. On L5P the turbo is a variable-geometry turbo (VGT) with an electric actuator and a position sensor; NO wastegate.1

Most likely causes

  1. VGT electric actuator position sensor signal out of range / performance — ECM sees position feedback from the VGT electric actuator that does not match commanded position under current operating conditions.1
  2. VGT actuator mechanical binding or sticking vanes causing position error — VGT mechanism cannot reach commanded position, so sensor feedback is out of expected range.1
  3. Wiring/connector issue to VGT actuator position sensor — High resistance, intermittent open/short, or connector corrosion changes sensor voltage/signal seen by ECM.2
  4. ECM calibration / learned position adaptation drift — Adapted VGT position learned values are outside allowable range, triggering range/performance fault.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze frame and repeatability; confirm P003A sets under specific load/speed conditions.
  2. Inspect VGT actuator electrical connector and harness for corrosion, oil intrusion, chafing; check secure seating.
  3. Command VGT vane position with scan tool and monitor desired vs actual position feedback; look for lag, dead spots, or out-of-range values.
  4. Check related turbo codes: P2563 (circuit high), P2564, P0234, P0299 to differentiate electrical vs performance issues.
  5. Inspect intake and boost plumbing for leaks/restrictions; note platform fact: boost leak/intake restriction causes underboost (P0299), not overboost (P0234).
  6. Review MAF/MAP data for plausibility; MAF is in intake duct and MAP is used for EGR/airflow modeling on L5P.

Parts and tools you may need

Rough cost and difficulty

Parts/labor vary by region and shop. VGT actuator replacement typically exceeds sensor-only service; diagnosis time varies with access and wiring condition.

When to see a pro

If bi-directional control shows no change in actual position, or wiring tests indicate internal actuator fault, have a qualified diesel technician evaluate the VGT actuator and ECM data. Do not attempt high-pressure fuel or turbocharger disassembly without proper training and safety controls.
