What it means

The PCM commands a rail pressure target and the rail pressure sensor reports actual pressure. P0087 sets when actual pressure is persistently below commanded under load or during commanded pressure ramp. On the L5P this is a high-pressure side delivery problem, not a per-cylinder supply issue; the common rail feeds all eight Bosch solenoid injectors from one rail.12

Most likely causes

  1. Low-pressure supply restriction or failure (lift pump / in-tank module, filter, lines, or tank pickup) causing insufficient inlet flow to the CP4.2 — Restricted or failing low-pressure supply reduces CP4.2 inlet flow/volume, limiting the pump’s ability to build commanded rail pressure, especially under load. NHTSA complaints note low-pressure pump failures leading to stalls on L5P trucks.3
  2. High-pressure pump (CP4.2) wear / internal leakage or FPCV (pump metering valve) malfunction — The L5P rail pressure is regulated by the pump’s internal FPCV; no external rail regulator exists. Pump wear, inlet metering valve sticking, or control issues can prevent reaching commanded pressure. How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze-frame conditions (engine speed, load, commanded vs. actual rail pressure) and confirm P0087 is current, not historical.
  2. Inspect low-pressure supply: check lift pump / in-tank module operation, fuel filter condition/restriction, and supply lines for kinks or contamination. NHTSA reports document low-pressure pump failures causing stalls on this platform.
  3. Using a scan tool, compare commanded rail pressure to actual rail pressure sensor feedback at idle and under load; look for inability to reach target, slow ramp, or large deviation. Platform uses rail pressure sensor with internal FPCV control and no external rail regulator.
  4. Check fuel pressure control valve (FPCV/pump metering) command % and response; erratic command or inability to increase pressure points to pump metering or control issue. L5P fuel pressure control is via the pump’s internal FPCV; related codes include P00FF, P128C/P128D.
  5. Perform a controlled high-pressure leak test (return flow measurement) and inspect high-pressure lines, rail, and injector return volume for excessive leakage that would prevent pressure build. Common rail feeds all cylinders from one rail.
  6. Validate rail pressure sensor accuracy by checking sensor supply/ground and signal integrity, and compare to a calibrated pressure measurement if available; a biased sensor can set P0087 without a mechanical fault. Rail pressure is sensed and closed-loop controlled on L5P.

Parts and labor vary by region and severity. Low-pressure supply components (lift pump/module, filters, lines) are generally less expensive than high-pressure pump replacement. CP4.2 replacement is a major repair; confirm root cause before replacing the high-pressure pump. NHTSA complaints reference large repair bills after low-pressure pump failures and stalls.

When to see a pro

If rail pressure cannot be brought to commanded values, if metal contamination is suspected from CP4.2 failure, or if high-pressure fuel system opening is required, stop diagnosis and have a qualified diesel technician evaluate the system.
