What it means

The PCM commands a target rail pressure and the rail pressure sensor reports actual pressure. P0088 sets when measured pressure is above commanded for a calibrated time/conditions. On L5P, rail pressure is set by the CP4.2 pump’s internal FPCV; there is no external rail pressure regulator.12

Most likely causes

  1. FPCV (pump metering valve) control fault / stuck closed – internal pump metering valve not reducing pump output, causing over-pressure. L5P uses CP4.2 with internal FPCV; no external rail regulator. Related codes: P0090, P00FF, P128C/P128D. — PCM commands FPCV duty cycle to lower pressure; a stuck-closed or electrically faulty FPCV keeps pump delivery high. Check FPCV command vs. rail pressure, FPCV circuit integrity, and pump control data. Do not disassemble high-pressure pump; refer to service information for control tests.123
  2. Rail pressure sensor skewed high / signal fault – sensor reports higher pressure than actual, prompting PCM to reduce pump command but pressure appears high. — Compare sensor voltage to a calibrated pressure reference (scan tool) and inspect sensor connector/wiring for contamination or damage. A biased high sensor can set P0088 without true over-pressure.1
  3. PCM fuel-pressure control strategy error – incorrect commanded pressure due to corrupted calibration or related input faults. — Verify PCM calibration, check for other fuel-pressure codes (P0087, P0090, P00FF, P128C/P128D) and review freeze-frame for engine load, RPM, temperature at set.123

Mechanical restriction preventing normal pressure bleed-off – e.g., injector return flow restriction or rail blockage causing pressure to remain elevated under certain conditions. — Assess injector return flow balance and rail pressure decay after pump command reduction using scan tool data. Do not perform high-pressure line disconnection; use approved diagnostic procedures.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze-frame: confirm P0088 is current, note engine speed, load, fuel temperature, and commanded vs. actual rail pressure at set.
  2. Inspect rail pressure sensor and wiring: check connector, terminals, and harness for oil intrusion, corrosion, or damage; review sensor voltage vs. spec using scan tool.
  3. Review fuel-pressure control data: monitor commanded rail pressure, actual rail pressure, and FPCV duty cycle at idle and during a controlled load increase. Look for actual > commanded with FPCV at minimum.
  4. Check for related fuel-pressure codes: P0087, P0090, P00FF, P128C/P128D indicate FPCV circuit or control issues on L5P.
  5. Assess pump control circuit integrity: verify FPCV reference voltage, ground, and command signal per service information; do not replace high-pressure pump without confirming electrical control.
  6. Perform pressure decay/relief evaluation using scan tool: command FPCV to reduce pressure and observe actual rail pressure response; abnormally slow decay suggests mechanical control issue.
