P0090 — Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Circuit — L5P Duramax
Diagnostic reference for P0090 on L5P Duramax (2017–present).
What it means
The ECM has detected an electrical fault in the circuit that controls the fuel pressure regulator. On the L5P the rail pressure is regulated by the pump’s internal fuel pressure control valve (FPCV / pump metering).12
Most likely causes
- FPCV control circuit open/short to ground or power — The ECM monitors the electrical circuit to the HP4 pump’s fuel pressure control valve. An open or short sets P0090.12
- Wiring/connector damage to the high-pressure pump control circuit — Chafed, corroded or loose connector at the HP4 pump or along the harness can cause intermittent or hard electrical fault detection by the ECM.12
- ECM driver fault for fuel pressure control — Internal ECM output driver failure for the FPCV control circuit can be detected as a circuit malfunction.12
How to diagnose
- Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P0090 is present and check for companion fuel-pressure codes P0087/P0088.
- Inspect high-pressure pump electrical connector and harness for damage, corrosion, moisture, or chafing; repair as needed.
- Check FPCV control circuit continuity and isolation to ground/power per service information; look for opens/shorts.
- Command FPCV duty cycle with scan tool and monitor ECM feedback / circuit status; verify electrical response.
- If circuit tests normal, evaluate ECM output driver and related power/ground circuits before condemning ECM.
- Clear codes, road test under load, and confirm no return of P0090 and normal rail pressure control.
- Note: Do not perform step-by-step repair of high-pressure fuel lines; this guide is for diagnosis only.
Parts and tools you may need
- Digital multimeter
- Scan tool with bi-directional control
- Wiring diagram for L5P fuel system
- Terminal release tools
- Dielectric grease
Tools you’ll need
- OBD-II scan tool — Reads P0090 and companion fuel-pressure codes, views freeze frame, and commands FPCV duty cycle to verify ECM control response.
- digital multimeter — Checks FPCV control circuit continuity and isolation to ground/power to find opens or shorts in the pump harness.
- inspection light — Reveals connector corrosion, moisture, chafing, or damage at the high-pressure pump electrical connector and wiring.
- battery load tester — Confirms stable system voltage and power/ground integrity before condemning the ECM driver for the FPCV circuit.
Rough cost and difficulty
| Likely repair | Parts | Shop labor | Who usually does it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wiring or connector repair | $10–$100 | 1–4 hrs | DIY with tools and a manual |
| Fuel pressure control valve (FCA/regulator) | $100–$400 | 0.5–2 hrs | DIY with tools and a manual |
| ECM/PCM replacement (programmed) | $600–$2,000 | 1–3 hrs | Shop |
Typical US independent-shop figures; labor runs about $120–$180 per hour (dealers charge more). Confirm the diagnosis before buying parts.
When to see a pro
If circuit tests normal but code returns, or if rail pressure control issues persist, have a qualified diesel technician evaluate the HP4 pump FPCV and ECM. High-pressure fuel system work requires specialized training and safety precautions.
Check for recalls
Recalls are tied to your truck’s VIN, so check yours directly: enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. Open safety recalls are repaired free at a dealer.
