What it means
The ECM has detected an open or malfunction in the fuel pressure regulator control circuit. On L5P Duramax the rail pressure is regulated by the pump’s internal fuel pressure control valve (FPCV / pump metering); there is no separate external fuel pressure regulator on the rail.12
Most likely causes
- Open or high-resistance in the FPCV control circuit (wiring, connector, terminals) to the CP4.2 pump — ECM cannot command the pump metering valve; circuit open detected. Inspect harness and connectors at pump and ECM for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.12
- Failed fuel pressure control valve (FPCV) / pump metering solenoid inside CP4.2 — Internal solenoid open or coil failure prevents pressure control; ECM sets circuit/open fault. Verify control signal and valve response with scan tool data.12
- ECM driver fault for fuel pressure control — Internal ECM output driver for FPCV control failed open. Confirm wiring integrity first; if wiring is good, suspect ECM.13
- Related fuel-pressure control codes present (P0087/P0088/P0090/P128C/P128D) — These codes share the same control system on L5P. Presence supports a fuel-pressure control issue rather than isolated sensor fault.2
How to diagnose
- Verify code and freeze frame; confirm P00FF is current and note engine/rail conditions.
- Inspect FPCV wiring and connector at CP4.2 pump for damage, corrosion, oil intrusion, or loose terminals.
- Check ECM harness connector and related grounds for integrity; perform visual and wiggle test.
- Use scan tool to view commanded vs actual rail pressure and FPCV duty cycle; look for implausible control values.
- Perform circuit tests for continuity and resistance of FPCV control circuit between ECM and pump; compare to spec.
- If circuit tests pass, evaluate FPCV solenoid resistance/operation per service information; do not replace high-pressure pump without confirming control circuit.
- If wiring and valve test normal, consider ECM driver fault after confirming power/ground and no intermittent opens.
- Clear codes, road test under load, and re-check for recurrence.
