What it means
The engine control module has detected that the mass or volume air flow sensor signal is outside the expected range for current operating conditions.1
Most likely causes
- MAF sensor contaminated or damaged — Oil, dirt, or debris on the hot-wire element skews the airflow reading; wiring or connector corrosion/intermittence also produces out-of-range signal.1
- Intake air leak or unmetered air entering downstream of MAF — Cracks in intake ducting, loose clamps, or aftermarket intake modifications let air bypass the MAF, causing measured vs. actual airflow mismatch.1
- Restricted air filter or intake restriction — A clogged filter or blocked intake reduces actual airflow relative to MAF expectation, triggering range/performance fault.1

- Command VGT actuator and monitor position sensor feedback; verify turbo can achieve expected boost for given airflow.
- Inspect EGR valve operation and intake for excessive soot buildup that could affect airflow modeling.
- If no mechanical faults found, test MAF sensor output against a known-good unit or scope signal integrity before condemning ECM.
