P0234 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Overboost Condition (L5P Duramax)

What it means
Boost pressure has exceeded the maximum allowed for current conditions. On the L5P Duramax this is a VGT boost-control issue; the platform uses a variable-geometry turbo with an electric actuator and position sensor and NO wastegate. A boost leak or intake restriction causes underboost (P0299), not overboost (P0234).12
Most likely causes
- VGT actuator / position sensor fault or mechanical sticking of the VGT vanes — The ECM monitors VGT position via the boost control position sensor. A sensor/actuator circuit fault or vane sticking can cause the vanes to stay in a high-boost position. Related codes on this platform include P003A, P2563, P2564.234
- Incorrect or delayed VGT control due to ECM calibration / learned values — If the ECM commands VGT position incorrectly because of learned adaptations or a software issue, boost can overshoot the target. Diagnosis focuses on commanded vs actual VGT position and boost pressure correlation.1
- MAP sensor reading error causing over-reporting of boost — The L5P uses MAP for EGR/airflow modeling. An inaccurate MAP signal can make actual boost appear higher than it is, triggering P0234. Verify MAP rationality against barometric and MAF data.2
- MAF sensor signal out of range affecting load/boost model — Air metering uses MAF (intake duct) + MAP for EGR/airflow modeling. A MAF circuit range/performance issue (P0101) can corrupt the boost/load model and contribute to overboost detection.2
- Exhaust restriction downstream of the turbo increasing drive pressure — A restriction in the exhaust after the turbine (e.g., DPF/SCR blockage) can raise turbine drive pressure and boost. The L5P has a full emissions set — EGR valve + cooler, DOC, DPF, and SCR with DEF.2
How to diagnose
- Verify freeze frame for engine speed, load, and commanded vs actual boost at time of set.
- Inspect VGT actuator electrical connector and wiring for damage/corrosion; check actuator and position sensor supply/ground and signal voltages per service info.
- Use scan tool to view VGT commanded position % vs actual position % and MAP/MAF readings; look for mismatch or slow response.
- Check for related codes P003A, P2563, P2564, P0299, P0101; address them first as they affect boost control [6,3,4].
- Perform a VGT actuator sweep test with scan tool to confirm mechanical movement of vanes and sensor feedback.
- Compare MAP to barometric pressure at key-on engine-off and at idle; verify MAP rationality under load.
- Inspect intake tract for foreign object/debris and verify air filter condition; confirm no intake restriction that would skew airflow modeling.
- Inspect exhaust backpressure and DPF/SCR condition for restriction that could increase drive pressure.
Parts and tools you may need
- Scan tool with GM enhanced diagnostics and live data graphing
- Digital multimeter
- Lab scope (optional for sensor waveform)
- VGT actuator test function via scan tool
Rough cost and difficulty
Parts and labor vary by region and by whether the VGT actuator, turbocharger assembly, or sensors are required. Diagnostic time is typically 1–2 hours; VGT actuator replacement is higher. Always confirm with a qualified diesel technician.
When to see a pro
If overboost persists after electronic checks, have a qualified diesel technician inspect the VGT mechanism and turbocharger for mechanical sticking or damage. Do not attempt to manually adjust or force VGT vanes. If the vehicle enters limp mode or shows reduced power, stop driving and seek professional service.
