What it means

The PCM detects that cylinder 1 output deviates from the others (Pxx6x family covers cylinders 1-8). Typical on this platform: L5P Duramax — hardware facts (authoritative).1

Most likely causes

  1. Cylinder 1 injector performance/electrical fault — Bosch common-rail solenoid injectors (8), externally mounted. P0201–P0208, P0300/P030x, per-cylinder balance / contribution (P0263-family) — note the rail feeds all cylinders from one rail; a “cylinder N contribution” fault is an injector or compression issue for that cylinder, not a per-cylinder fuel-supply line.2
  2. Cylinder 1 compression loss — Per-cylinder balance / contribution (P0263-family) — note the rail feeds all cylinders from one rail; a “cylinder N contribution” fault is an injector or compression issue for that cylinder, not a per-cylinder fuel-supply line.2
  3. Injector circuit/open for cylinder 1 — The engine control module has detected an electrical fault in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder number one.3

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze frame and repeat the contribution test under steady load to confirm cylinder 1 deviation.
  2. Inspect injector electrical connector and harness for damage/corrosion; check injector driver command and circuit integrity for cylinder 1.
  3. Perform cylinder contribution/balance test with scan tool; compare cylinder 1 to others.
  4. Check rail pressure actual vs desired during the test; rail pressure is regulated by the pump’s internal fuel pressure control valve (FPCV / pump metering) — there is no separate external fuel pressure regulator on the rail.
  5. If electrical and rail pressure are normal, evaluate cylinder 1 mechanical health (compression/leak-down) as a contribution fault is an injector or compression issue for that cylinder.
  6. Review recent fuel system service history; metal contamination from CP4.2 can affect injector performance.

Rough cost and difficulty

Diagnostic labor varies; injector replacement and compression repairs can be high cost on L5P. Parts and labor should be confirmed with a qualified diesel shop.

When to see a pro

If contribution fault persists after electrical checks, or compression is low, have a qualified diesel technician perform injector testing and mechanical evaluation. Do not attempt high-pressure fuel system service without proper training and safety equipment.
