P2201 — NOx Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 Sensor 1 — L5P Duramax

Diagnostic reference for P2201 on L5P Duramax (2017–present).

Updated October 15, 2026

What it means

P2201 is the generic SAE J2012 definition for NOx sensor circuit range/performance, bank 1 sensor 1. On the L5P Duramax this is the upstream NOx sensor used for SCR control.1

Most likely causes

  1. NOx sensor connector or wiring damaged/corroded — Inspect the upstream NOx sensor connector and harness for corrosion, moisture intrusion, bent pins, or chafing along the exhaust routing. Check for proper terminal tension and secure locking of the connector.1
  2. NOx sensor internal failure / degraded performance — The sensor element or internal electronics can drift out of range, causing the ECM to flag range/performance. Compare sensor output behavior to expected values during steady cruise and compare to downstream sensor trends.1
  3. Exhaust leak near the upstream NOx sensor — A leak upstream of the sensor can dilute exhaust gas and alter NOx readings, leading to range/performance faults. Inspect manifold, up-pipe, and sensor boss for leaks, gasket integrity, and proper sensor installation torque.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze-frame conditions; confirm P2201 is current and note engine temp, load, and speed at set.
  2. Visually inspect the upstream NOx sensor connector, wiring, and routing for damage, corrosion, or heat exposure; repair as needed.
  3. Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, up-pipe, and sensor boss; repair leaks and ensure sensor is properly seated.
  4. Monitor NOx sensor voltage/current and temperature parameters with a scan tool during a steady drive cycle; look for out-of-range or erratic signals.
  5. If wiring and exhaust integrity are good, evaluate sensor performance against expected behavior and replace the upstream NOx sensor if it remains out of range.

Common mistake to avoid

Replacing sensors, the doser or the SCR catalyst before testing the DEF. Old, heat-stored or diluted DEF loses strength and sets the same efficiency codes. Check it with a refractometer first. Source: Ram service bulletin 25-005-14 (Diesel Exhaust Fluid).

Wiring or connector repair$10–$1001–4 hrsDIY with tools and a manual
Exhaust manifold, gasket or up-pipe leak repair$50–$4002–6 hrsDIY with tools and a manual

Typical US independent-shop figures; labor runs about $120–$180 per hour (dealers charge more). Confirm the diagnosis before buying parts.

When to see a pro

If diagnosis requires removal of exhaust components, sensor replacement, or ECM data interpretation, have a qualified diesel technician perform the work. Do not attempt high-pressure fuel or exhaust system repairs without proper training and safety equipment.

Check for recalls

Recalls are tied to your truck’s VIN, so check yours directly: enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. Open safety recalls are repaired free at a dealer.
