P0087 — Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low (LB7 Duramax)
Measured fuel rail pressure is below the PCM's commanded value. On the LB7 Duramax this is a CP3 common-rail pressure control issue.
What it means
The PCM commands rail pressure but the rail pressure sensor reports lower than expected. On the LB7 Duramax the high-pressure side is a Bosch CP3 pump with a pump-mounted fuel pressure regulator and a rail pressure sensor; rail-pressure codes P0087/P0088, regulator/FPR codes P0089/P0090, and P1093 apply.123
Most likely causes
- Insufficient low-pressure supply to the CP3 (restricted pickup, clogged filter, failing lift pump, air ingress). — Low supply volume/pressure starves the CP3, so commanded rail pressure cannot be reached under load.1
- Worn or failing CP3 high-pressure pump. — Reduced pumping capacity causes rail pressure to fall short of command, especially at higher RPM/load.1
- Leaking or stuck-open fuel pressure regulator (FPR) on the CP3. — Regulator unable to maintain rail pressure; PCM sees low pressure vs command. Regulator performance/electrical faults are covered by P0089/P0090 on this platform.3
- Rail pressure sensor or circuit fault causing under-reporting. — Sensor/wiring fault can make actual pressure appear low. LB7 uses a rail pressure sensor; circuit high/low codes are P0193/P0192.45
- Excessive injector return flow / leaking injectors. — LB7 injectors are mounted under the valve covers and are a known weak point; high return flow bleeds rail pressure. Injector faults typically set P0201–P0208, misfire P0300/P030x, rough running/fuel in oil/white smoke.1
- High-pressure line or rail leak. — External or internal leak on the high-pressure side reduces achievable rail pressure.1
How to diagnose
- Verify freeze frame and repeat the fault under load; log commanded vs actual rail pressure.
- Inspect low-pressure supply: filter condition, water separator, pickup/strainer restriction, and check for air ingress in suction lines.
- Check rail pressure sensor signal integrity and wiring/connectors; compare sensor voltage to spec and rule out P0192/P0193 circuit faults.
- Command rail pressure with scan tool and observe actual pressure response; evaluate CP3 output and FPR control.
- Assess injector return flow/balance rates and look for fuel in oil, white smoke, misfire codes consistent with LB7 injector issues.
- Inspect high-pressure lines, rail, and fittings for leaks; perform a controlled pressure hold test if supported.

Rough cost and difficulty
Parts and labor vary by region and vehicle condition. CP3 replacement, injector service, and fuel system repairs can be costly on the LB7; diagnosis should confirm the root cause before parts replacement.
When to see a pro
If rail pressure remains low after basic checks, or if injector return testing / high-pressure component service is required, have a qualified diesel technician perform the work. High-pressure fuel systems are dangerous. Do not attempt high-pressure line service without proper training and tools.
