P0128 — Coolant Thermostat Below Regulating Temperature (LB7 Duramax)
Engine coolant does not reach the expected operating temperature in the expected time.
What it means
The ECM has detected that engine coolant temperature is below the thermostat regulating temperature for a sustained period under normal operating conditions. On the LB7 Duramax, this is a generic thermostat-below-regulating-temperature monitor that applies to this platform. The LB7 uses a conventional mechanical thermostat in the coolant crossover.1
Most likely causes
- Thermostat stuck open or weak (most common). — The LB7 uses two mechanical thermostats in the coolant crossover. A stuck-open or weak thermostat prevents the engine from reaching regulating temperature, triggering P0128.1
- Coolant temperature sensor / circuit fault. — Erroneous low ECT readings can cause the ECM to believe the engine is not reaching temperature. Verify sensor accuracy and wiring before condemning the thermostat.1
- Low coolant level / air pocket in cooling system. — Insufficient coolant or trapped air reduces heat transfer and delays warm-up. Confirm proper fill and bleed of the cooling system.1
- Excessive cooling from high-speed driving, extended idle, or a stuck-open grille shutter / winter front missing. — Continuous high airflow can keep coolant below regulating temperature in cold ambient conditions.1
- ECM calibration / false monitor trigger. — Intermittent P0128 can occur with marginal warm-up profiles; confirm with live data that ECT fails to reach ~180-195°F under normal drive cycles.1
How to diagnose
- Verify freeze frame and live data: monitor ECT rise rate and stabilized temperature during a normal drive cycle. Compare to expected regulating temperature.
- Inspect coolant level, condition, and bleed for air pockets; pressure test cooling system for leaks.
- Check ECT sensor reading vs. infrared thermometer at the thermostat housing once warm; inspect connector and wiring for corrosion.
- Command a warm-up test with minimal accessory load and moderate ambient temperature; log time-to-temperature.
- If ECT never reaches regulating temperature, remove and test thermostats in hot water for opening temperature and full stroke.
Parts and tools you may need
- Infrared thermometer
- OBD-II scan tool with live data
- Cooling system pressure tester
- Thermostat test pot / hot water bath
- Basic hand tools for thermostat housing access
Rough cost and difficulty
Parts cost varies by brand and labor; thermostat replacement on LB7 requires crossover removal and coolant drain/refill. Diagnostic time is typically 0.5–1.0 hr; parts and labor vary by shop.
When to see a pro
If ECT readings are erratic, wiring faults are suspected, or thermostat replacement does not resolve the code, have a qualified diesel technician inspect the cooling system and ECM data to avoid misdiagnosis.
