What it means
On the LB7 Duramax, P0234 means the ECM has seen boost pressure exceed the allowed maximum for the current engine conditions. The platform has a fixed-geometry IHI turbo and no VGT actuator/vanes, so overboost is not due to variable-geometry control. The generic definition is boost pressure has exceeded the maximum allowed for current conditions.1
Most likely causes
- Boost pressure sensor / MAP circuit fault causing erroneous high reading — A biased high MAP/boost sensor signal or wiring fault can make the ECM think boost is higher than actual. The LB7 uses a MAP sensor for boost monitoring; sensor circuit faults are covered by codes such as P0237 for low circuit voltage.2
- Boost leak or intake restriction causing pressure spikes — Leaks in intercooler piping, loose clamps, or a restricted intake can create abnormal pressure dynamics that trigger overboost detection. How to diagnose

- Inspect intake tract, intercooler pipes, boots and clamps for leaks, splits or loose connections; pressure-test the boost system if available.
- Check MAP/boost sensor supply voltage, ground and signal wiring for chafing, corrosion or moisture; compare live MAP voltage to a known-good reference at idle and with shop air applied.
- Inspect turbocharger compressor wheel for damage, shaft play and foreign object damage; check for oil ingestion or excessive shaft play indicating mechanical fault.
- Inspect exhaust system for restriction, collapsed catalytic converter/muffler or excessive backpressure that can raise drive pressure.
- Review fueling and engine load data to ensure overboost is not a secondary effect of abnormal fueling or load conditions; LB7 uses CP3 common rail with rail pressure sensor and pump-mounted regulator.
