P0299 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost Condition (LB7 Duramax)

What it means
Boost pressure is below the minimum expected for current conditions. On the LB7 Duramax the turbo is an IHI fixed-geometry unit with no variable geometry, no VGT actuator, no vanes [platform facts]. Therefore underboost is due to boost leak, sensor/electrical issue, or turbo damage rather than VGT control.1
Most likely causes
- Boost leak in intake tract / intercooler piping / boots — Inspect for split/cracked intercooler boots, loose clamps, or cracked intercooler. A leak reduces measured boost and can set underboost.1
- Boost pressure sensor circuit low / sensor fault — The ECM detects an abnormally low voltage signal from the boost pressure sensor circuit. Check sensor supply/ground and signal wiring, connector corrosion, and sensor reading vs. a mechanical gauge.2
- Turbocharger mechanical damage / worn compressor/turbine — Fixed-geometry IHI turbo (RHG6) can suffer worn bearings, damaged compressor wheel, or exhaust restriction causing insufficient boost [platform facts]. Compare actual vs. expected boost under load.1
- Exhaust restriction upstream of turbo — A clogged catalytic converter or muffler (if equipped) or collapsed exhaust pipe increases backpressure and reduces turbine drive. LB7 has no EGR/DPF/SCR per platform facts, so restriction is limited to exhaust after turbo.1
- Intake restriction / clogged air filter — Restricted airflow limits compressor inlet flow and boost production. Verify air filter condition and intake ducting integrity.1

- Monitor live boost pressure vs. expected for RPM/load; use mechanical boost gauge to validate sensor.
- Inspect turbocharger for shaft play, compressor wheel damage, oil leaks, and inlet/exhaust restrictions.
- Check air filter and intake ducting for blockage; verify MAF sensor readings are plausible [platform facts].
