P1216 — Injection Timing Control Circuit Range/Performance (LB7 Duramax)

What it means

The engine control module has detected that the fuel injection timing control circuit is operating outside its expected range or performance. On this platform P1216 is a Ford Powerstroke-specific injection-control-pressure code and is not a defined DTC for the LB7 Duramax.1

Most likely causes

  1. Code is not defined for LB7 Duramax; likely misread or cross-platform code — LB7 Duramax (2001-2004) has no VGT/EGR/DPF/SCR and uses CP3 common rail with under-valve-cover Bosch injectors; P1216 is a Ford Powerstroke-specific injection-control-pressure (ICP) code and is not a defined DTC for this platform.1
  2. ECM/PCM software or scan-tool misinterpretation — Generic definition applies: the ECM has detected fuel injection timing control circuit outside expected range or performance.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify the exact DTC with a GM-compatible scan tool; confirm code is P1216 and not P1093, P0087/P0088, P0089/P0090, or injector circuit codes P0201-P0208.
  2. Check for other active codes. LB7-relevant fuel-system faults include rail pressure codes P0087/P0088, regulator performance P0089/P0090, and injector circuit faults P0201, P0202, P0204.
  3. Inspect ECM data for rail pressure actual vs desired, injector balance rates, and timing advance. LB7 uses CP3 high-pressure pump, common rail, rail pressure sensor, fuel pressure regulator on the pump.
  4. Review platform hardware: LB7 has Bosch injectors mounted under the valve covers, IHI fixed-geometry turbo with no VGT actuator, glow plugs with GPCM, no EGR/DPF/SCR, and MAF plus MAP for airflow.
  5. If no LB7-specific codes are present and P1216 persists, suspect scan-tool translation error or non-GM calibration; clear codes and retest with OEM-level diagnostics.

Rough cost and difficulty

If P1216 is a scan-tool artifact, cost is diagnostic time only. If underlying fuel-system issues are found, typical LB7 repairs involve CP3 regulator, rail pressure sensor, or under-valve-cover injector service, which are labor-intensive.

When to see a pro

If actual LB7 fuel-system codes appear, e.g., rail pressure faults P0087/P0088, regulator performance P0089/P0090, or injector circuit faults P0201/P0202/P0204, have a Duramax specialist test rail pressure, injector balance rates, and injector harness under the valve covers. Do not attempt high-pressure fuel line service without proper training and safety equipment.
