P0087 — Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low (LLY / LBZ / LMM Duramax)

Measured fuel rail pressure is below the PCM's commanded value on LLY/LBZ/LMM Duramax 2004.5–2010 with Bosch CP3 common rail and pump-mounted fuel pressure…

Updated September 2, 2026

What it means

The PCM commands rail pressure but the rail sensor reports low pressure. On LLY/LBZ/LMM the high-pressure side is CP3 pump → rail → injectors; pressure is controlled by the pump-mounted regulator. Low rail pressure can cause power loss/limp and may set P0087. Source describes the generic definition and platform; source shows a real-world P0087 event with power reduction on an LMM.12

Most likely causes

  1. Restricted fuel supply to CP3 (clogged primary filter, water separator, tank pickup/strainer, or air ingress). Low inlet flow limits CP3 output and rail pressure under load. — Check for fuel starvation signs, filter condition, and air in supply lines. A clogged filter can cause low rail pressure at highway load, as seen in the NHTSA report where a filter change allowed limp home. Source documents P0087 with power loss while towing; source confirms P0087 is low rail pressure on this platform.21
  2. Failing or worn CP3 high-pressure pump. — CP3 wear reduces ability to build commanded rail pressure, especially at higher RPM/load. Diagnosis is by comparing actual vs desired rail pressure with a scan tool under load. Platform uses CP3 common rail. Source notes CP3 common rail; source confirms CP3 with pump-mounted regulator on this platform.13
  3. Pump-mounted fuel pressure regulator performance issue. — Regulator stuck open or unable to maintain pressure can cause low rail pressure. P0089 is regulator performance on this platform. Source defines P0089 regulator performance and confirms pump-mounted regulator on LLY/LBZ/LMM; source confirms pump-mounted regulator.43
  4. Rail pressure sensor signal fault causing under-reporting. — A sensor reading low can set P0087 even if mechanical pressure is OK. Related code P0193 is sensor circuit high on this platform. Source confirms P0193 applies to LLY/LBZ/LMM; source defines P0087 as measured pressure below commanded.51
  5. High-pressure leak or injector return excessive. — External leaks at rail fittings, injector return, or cracked lines bleed pressure. Injectors are externally mounted on LLY/LBZ/LMM. Source notes injectors mounted externally.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze frame and repeat the condition; log actual vs desired rail pressure with scan tool under load.
  2. Inspect primary fuel filter/water separator and tank pickup for restriction or air ingress; check for recent filter change history.
  3. Check fuel supply volume/pressure to CP3 inlet per service info; look for air bubbles in supply line.
  4. Monitor rail pressure sensor voltage and compare to mechanical gauge if available; check for P0193/P0089 companion codes.
  5. Inspect high-pressure pump and regulator for leaks, noise, and control signals; evaluate CP3 performance vs desired pressure.
  6. Inspect rail, fittings, and external injectors for high-pressure leaks and excessive return flow.
  7. Clear codes, road test under load, and confirm actual vs desired rail pressure stays within spec.

Parts and tools you may need

Rough cost and difficulty

Costs vary by region and labor rates. Typical items: primary fuel filter ~ $30–$80; CP3 high-pressure pump ~ $800–$1,800 plus labor; fuel pressure regulator ~ $200–$500 plus labor; rail pressure sensor ~ $150–$300 plus labor. Diagnosis labor is additional.

When to see a pro

If rail pressure remains low after filter/service checks, or if high-pressure pump/regulator replacement is indicated, have a qualified diesel technician perform pressure testing and component evaluation. Do not disassemble high-pressure fuel lines without proper training and depressurization procedures.
