P0193 — Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit High (LLY / LBZ / LMM Duramax)

Diagnostic reference for LLY/LBZ/LMM Duramax 2004.5–2010.

Updated September 2, 2026

What it means

The ECM has detected the fuel rail pressure sensor signal is higher than the expected range. P0193 applies to LLY/LBZ/LMM Duramax 2004.5-2010.1

Most likely causes

  1. Rail pressure sensor signal shorted to voltage / internal sensor fault — Sensor A circuit high can be a true over-range electrical fault in the rail pressure sensor or its wiring. The platform uses a rail pressure sensor on the CP3 common rail system.12
  2. Wiring/connector damage to rail pressure sensor circuit — Chafed or corroded harness to the rail pressure sensor can pull the signal high. The rail pressure sensor is part of the CP3 common rail fuel system on LLY/LBZ/LMM.2
  3. ECM input fault / reference/ground issue affecting sensor reading — A reference voltage or ground problem can cause a high sensor reading. The code definition is ECM detecting sensor signal higher than expected range.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code P0193 is present and check freeze frame for engine conditions.
  2. Inspect rail pressure sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or oil intrusion; compare sensor supply/reference/ground voltages to spec.
  3. Monitor rail pressure sensor PID vs. actual rail pressure with a scan tool during key-on/engine-off and idle; look for stuck high voltage.
  4. Check ECM connectors and related grounds for corrosion/loose pins.
  5. If electrical checks are normal, evaluate fuel system pressure control: CP3 pump-mounted pressure regulator performance can affect rail pressure behavior; compare commanded vs. measured rail pressure to distinguish a true pressure issue from a sensor circuit issue.
  6. Review related fuel system codes: P0088 fuel rail/system pressure too high, P0087 too low, P0089 regulator performance.

Rough cost and difficulty

Costs vary by region and labor. Electrical diagnosis typically lower cost than fuel system component replacement. CP3 regulator and rail pressure sensor replacement costs differ by sub-engine and parts source.

When to see a pro

If high-pressure fuel system testing is required, or if wiring repairs involve high-pressure fuel lines, have a qualified diesel technician perform the work. Do not attempt step-by-step repair of safety-critical high-pressure fuel components.
