P0234 — Turbocharger/Supercharger Overboost Condition (LLY / LBZ / LMM Duramax)
P0234 is set when the ECM detects boost pressure above the calibrated maximum for current operating conditions on the LLY/LBZ/LMM Duramax VGT turbo.
What it means
Boost pressure has exceeded the maximum allowed for current conditions. On LLY/LBZ/LMM Duramax 2004.5-2010, this is applicable because these engines use a variable-geometry turbo (VGT) with electric/servo actuation and position feedback.1
Most likely causes
- VGT vane control fault causing over-boost — VGT vane position error or sticking vanes can produce excessive boost. The platform uses a VGT with electric servo and position feedback sensor; related VGT codes include P003A, P2563, P2564.234
- Boost control solenoid / circuit fault — Electrical fault in the turbocharger boost control solenoid circuit can disrupt commanded vane position and lead to overboost. P0045 is the boost control solenoid circuit/open code for this platform.5
- MAP sensor reading / intake restriction anomaly — Incorrect MAP signal or intake restriction can cause the ECM to see higher-than-expected manifold pressure. The platform uses MAP for boost monitoring.1
- Excessive exhaust backpressure / DPF restriction (LMM only) — On LMM 2007.5-2010, a restricted DPF can raise drive pressure and contribute to overboost. DPF codes apply to LMM only per platform facts.6
- ECM calibration / sensor drift — Sensor drift or calibration mismatch can cause the ECM to interpret normal boost as overboost. Generic definition is boost exceeding maximum allowed for conditions.1
How to diagnose
- Verify freeze frame data for engine speed, load, and boost at set time.
- Inspect intake and charge-air system for leaks, blockages, and proper MAP sensor connection.
- Check VGT actuator and vane operation via scan tool bi-directional control and monitor VGT position sensor feedback; compare to expected range.
- Test boost control solenoid circuit integrity and command response; reference P0045 circuit fault definition.
- Review related codes P003A, P2563, P2564, P0299 for concurrent VGT/boost issues.
- For LMM only, assess DPF restriction status and exhaust backpressure as contributing factor.
